Life On the Inside
Although there are administrative and supervisory guidelines that every jail follows, they are also allowed leeway when it comes to developing programs and granting inmates access to various items. For instance at the Niagara County Jail, inmates are allowed to buy a portable radio from the commissary that they can keep in their cell.
Often when a prisoner is shipped upstate to the federal prison, their radio is inherited by another inmate because they arenít allowed to take a device like that with them. Inmates also have access to board games like Risk, backgammon and chess along with cards.
The Niagara County Jail consists of nine cell blocks, four pods and various open dormitories to house a total of 514 inmates both male and female. Within those configurations are areas for protective custody inmates who need to be kept isolated from the rest of the population. The youth offenders are also housed in their own unit while yet another area is just for short term inmates.
The meal menus run the gambit between an "edible at least" version of corkscrew pasta with cream sauce through greasy bologna and mustard packets as lunch.
Good Behavior Policy
The maximum of good time reduction an inmate can receive at Niagara County Jail is up to three months off a year sentence. That 1/3 formula can also be applied to smaller sentences as well provided the inmate has a clean record while staying in the jail. This also includes not coming on to the female guards. That's enough to get an inmate written up.
Visit and Telephone Policy
Inmates are allowed to have visitors from Tuesday through Saturday. The visiting area is an open room much like the cafeteria. Anyone who plans on visiting an inmate at Niagara County Jail should be prepared to present a valid picture ID and allow themselves to go through a metal detector and get searched.
As long as the jail wasnít on lock-down, then inmates can make outgoing collect calls on the telephones. All local charges would apply.
